Benefits of the IB Programs

With the IB Continuum programs starting from the Primary Years, students receive a truly 360º education that prepares them for a future filled with academic, professional, and personal successes and opportunities.

IB students typically outperform peers who study under different national or international programs. This is due to the IB's comprehensive curricula, inquiry-based approach, and focus on social, emotional, and academic skills development, equipping students to excel globally.

The IB is recognized by universities and employers in Brazil and internationally for its academic excellence, with the IB Diploma Program qualification being accepted by colleges in Brazil in place of national exams and requirements. Internationally, IB graduates' strong academic achievements and grades can earn them college credits and scholarships.

The IB Middle Years & Diploma Programs

The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge and real-world learning, encouraging students to connect their studies with the world around them. Communication, intercultural understanding, and global engagement are prioritized at this stage, as they are crucial for life in the 21st century.

In high school, all our IB students carefully select courses at standard and higher levels that align with their interests and prepare them for success in a rich and nuanced program of study. The Diploma Program is well-recognized by leading universities worldwide and is designed to support students' intellectual, social, emotional, and physical well-being. Over the 18 months of the IB Diploma Program at our school, students refine their academic skills across six subject groups. Additionally, IB Diploma students enhance their research and writing abilities through the Extended Essay and develop as well-rounded individuals through participation in Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) experiences and projects.

IBDP Assessment & Grades

In the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP), students receive subject grades ranging from 7 to 1, with 7 being the highest. At the end of the program, students are given a grade for each DP course they have taken. A student’s final Diploma result score is calculated by combining the scores for each of the 6 subjects (up to 42 points) and adding up to 3 more points from the Core elements, resulting in a final score out of 45 points.

The diploma is awarded to students who earn at least 24 points, provided they meet certain minimum levels of performance and successfully complete the three core elements of the DP. The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay (EE) components are individually graded and, together, can contribute up to 3 additional points toward the overall Diploma score. Confirmed participation in Creativity, Action, Service (CAS), the remaining element in the DP core, is a requirement for the award of the diploma, although it does not contribute to the points total.

The Structure of the IB Continuum Programs at Land School

At Land School, the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IB MYP) spans the four years of Middle School, from Grades 6 to 9. The MYP builds upon the foundational knowledge and skills acquired during the IB Primary Years Program, fostering the development of independent, globally-minded, lifelong learners, and paving the way for the final and more challenging IB Diploma Program.

In the IB MYP Curriculum, there are eight distinct subject areas: Arts, Individuals & Societies, Language & Literature, Language Acquisition, Mathematics, Physical & Health Education, Science, and Design. This approach ensures a holistic education, preparing our students to thrive with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills for the DP.  At Land School, these subjects are combined with the mandatory Brazilian curriculum requirements, providing dual preparation to excel in both.

The final year of the MYP serves as preparation for the IB Diploma Program, where subject choices should align with university course aspirations and career goals.

In High School, students follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP), widely recognized as the world’s leading pre-university qualification, renowned for its rigorous and challenging curriculum.

The IBDP offers depth and breadth across several subject groups, equipping our senior students with the academic foundation needed for university studies in their chosen fields.

In the IB Diploma program, students study subjects from six different subject groups. They select three subjects to study at a Higher Level (HL) and three at a Standard Level (SL). Students receive personalized guidance to choose subjects that align with their university course aspirations and requirements. Portuguese is pre-selected at a Higher Level for all. With the IBDP, they will study:

  • two modern languages
  • a humanities or social science subject
  • an experimental science
  • mathematics
  • one of the creative arts or an additional subject from the previous groups.

Additionally, students are required to complete the IBDP Core elements, which consist of Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and a 4,000-word Extended Essay (EE).

Our IB students are required to take BNCC (Common National Curriculum Framework) subjects to meet the standards set by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. Physics, Chemistry, and Writing classes are conducted in Portuguese, while IB subjects are taught in English.
